Trying to use braid on my Qualia DM-40 was pretty much of a disaster (see recent post), so, I'm back to the baitcasters. I am thinking may mount it on my 7' ML Ugly Stik Striper Rod and start using it for Striped Bass Its still a Bass :) I think it handle them, but the only problem I see with it. I wonder if Abu used the same thread nut on any of their old spincast reels? If yes I might be able to rob one just so I can try out my new line. I have a Abu Garcia Ambassadeur ONE 5000 Baitcasting Reel, that I been using for largemouth bass fishing. All I can tell you is that its and Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 Winch w/ a gear ratio of 3.8:1. This wide-spool baitcaster is a time-tested piece of angling workmanship. if I know in advance the nut is metric or not (I assume the original Swedish nut would be metric), and B ) I can buy the qty. I just got one of these reels today (for free) and the original owner, nor me, know anything about it. The Abu Garcia 6000 is the Ultimate All-Around Fishing Reel. Luckily, in the h'ware store I most often frequent, the machine screws & nuts are mostly in open bins (not prepackaged), so, A) I can eyeball it & find the right size fairly quickly, esp. this spring and that gave me good casting distance, and some snarls. The heavier braid is for hoped for better manageability - I tried 20 lb. braid, to be used with most likely a 20 lb. (Mostly they hire young college kids, and not once has an employee suggested a sizer when I go in looking for a match of a machine screw or nut.) mono as backing, and then 60 yards of 50 lb. Haha - in these stores around here, I'll be lucky to find an employee who knows what a thread sizer is, in 5 minutes.
